I became Nick's friend during the last three difficult years of his life. I first met Nick in my role as hospital chaplain and then continued to visit him after his permanent move to Illini Restorative Care. During our weekly visits we discussed a myriad of things ranging from his passion for teaching and research to his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. We delved into deeper topics too like the origin of the universe, subatomic particles, faith and hope in God, saving grace and eternal life found in Jesus Christ, love and forgiveness.
Nick had an engineer's mind and wanted data and proof before he could believe something was so . Our discussions were often serious and he frequently challenged me to defend my beliefs. I think our weekly visits helped make each of us better.
I know Nick was grateful to all those who cared for him; especially his brother Carl who made many sacrifices during this time of struggle for Nick. I will miss my friend Nick and our visits. My thoughts, prayers, and sympathy go out to Carl and all those who loved and cared for Nick.
