Nicholas S. Winowich Ph.D.

January 9, 1950 ~ November 26, 2016 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Age 66, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2016, at the Illini Restorative Care Facility in Silvis, IL. He was formerly of Pittsburgh, dear son of the late Nick and Alva Winowich; beloved brother of Carl P. Miller. Nick was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Mechanical Engineering and received a Ph.D. on December 16, 1986. Nick was the consummate educator and relished his time in the classroom. He began his career at the University of Maine. Nick's most recent position was at the Western Illinois University campus in Moline, IL. where he assisted in the creation of the engineering department. Nick's failing health was the cause of his early retirement from teaching. Along with a career in teaching, he also had experience in the industrial sector with work for the US Office of Scientific Research and the NASA Lewis Research Center. He was the recipient of several honors in the field of mechanical engineering as well as holding membership in many professional societies. He has authored and co-authored several engineering publications. During his career, he was also awarded various grants for research in the area of fluid mechanics. Nick's family would like to acknowledge the following individuals who participated in the care and well-being of Nick: Angie Swanson and Tina Rivera, Chaplain Erling Larson, who was a source of great comfort to Nick, the entire nursing and CNA's staff at IRC, also the dietary and housekeeping departments. For those staff members who were able to jump out of the way of Nick and his demon wheelchair, we salute you. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Demeurisse of Silvis who opened their home and hearts at a time of great sadness. Friends received Friday 7-9 PM in Thomas J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Inc. 2323 E.
