Age 87, of Whitehall, (but always a South Sider at heart) peacefully on January 1, 2022, the one year anniversary of the death of her beloved husband of 60 years, Melvin (Her: "I've sure missed you." Him: "In 60 years, you've never been ready when I was, so I gave you some more time.") Although robbed of her sharp wit by dementia at the end, Mara was known for her sometimes bawdy humor, her incredible perseverance, and her impeccable sense of style. A survivor of a major stroke in her mid 30s ("I had to get better-- I wasn't going to let someone else raise my kids"), Mara uniquely embraced her role as mother and wife (think more Roseanne and less June Cleaver). She truly was a remarkable woman. Predeceased by parents, Simo and Milka (Mamula); sisters Anna (Robert) Harkins, Ruby (William) Miller, Milena (Leo) McNicholas and brother Nick (wife Jean survives) Wujnovich. Surviving to cherish her memory are her sons Mark of Winchester, VA. and Matthew (Daniel Foust) of Mt. Lebanon as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and friends. Because of the continuing health crisis, there will be no visitation. Burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Arrangements handled by Thomas J. Gmiter Funeral Home. Because Mara had an incredible love for reading and for those who were in need, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Friends of Whitehall Library, 100 Borough Park Drive, Pittsburgh, PA. 15236, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, 1 N. Linden Street, Duquesne, PA. 15110, or a charity of your choice.
