John Hawkins, beloved husband, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Born on January 19, 1945, to Andrew and Anna (Schiftic) Hawkins on the Southside of Pittsburgh, John went on to live a life as vibrant and full as the city that raised him. A standout athlete, he played football for Western New Mexico University, where he earned his degree.
After college, John returned home to Pittsburgh and dedicated his career to shaping young lives as a teacher and athletics coach for Pittsburgh Public Schools. His passion for fitness and mentoring extended far beyond the classroom and playing field—he inspired countless students with his humor, patience, and genuine care.
John was known for his generous heart, quick wit, and endless loyalty to those he loved. He found joy in exercise, music, movies, and Pittsburgh sports. He lived with curiosity, laughter, and a sense of adventure that made every day with him memorable.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Andy; his sister, Victoria. He is survived by his loving partner of over 40 years, Michele; his stepson, Michael; his brother, Russ; his grandchildren, Michael, Maegan, and Morgan; and his great-grandchild, D’Angelo; his nieces and nephews; all of whom carry his light and laughter forward.
A viewing will be held for family and friends to gather, share stories, and celebrate a life well-lived—one full of love, generosity, and unforgettable moments at Thomas J. Gmiter Funeral Home at 2323 E Carson Street on Pittsburgh’s Southside, Friday, October 10th from 1-7pm.
