Age 88, devoted husband, loving father and adored grandfather, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Irene (Kapolka) Rechtorik; his daughters, Mae (Douglas) Barnes and Kimberly (David) Tobiczyk; his grandsons, Stephen (Alice) Barnes, Kevin Barnes and Samuel Tobiczyk; and his loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Rechtorik and Eva Glogovsky; and by his nine brothers and sisters. Born in New Salem, Fayette County, Stephen proudly joined the United States Navy at age 17, serving as a corpsman in WW II and aboard the cruiser USS Roanoke during the Korean War. Upon his return, he began his 30 year career as a draftsman at J&L Steel, where his team perfected and patented a process for the bottom-pouring of steel. He served as Commander of Schenley Post 663 of the American Legion for 50 years, and previously as the District Commander for the Pittsburgh region. He will be remembered most fondly for his stories, his jokes, and his love of his family. Friends received Thursday 2-8 PM in Thomas J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Inc. 2323 E. Carson St. Funeral Prayer Friday 9:00 AM, Mass of Christian Burial in St. Adalbert Church, Prince of Peace Parish at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mt. Lebanon Family Hospice & Palliative Care, Inpatient Unit, in gratitude for the care and comfort provided by their nurses, staff and volunteers.
