Age 64, of Whitehall, passed away with peace and dignity on November 1, 2015. He was a force that left a large footprint in the city he was born and raised. Growing up on Pittsburgh's South Side, Len worked his way through college and graduated with a degree in business from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he joined the ranks of management at U.S. Steel, eventually spearheading efforts to launch the company's e-commerce division and serving as a manager in Information Technology. He represented U.S. Steel on the American Iron & Steel Institute Board and after 33 years of service, retired at the age of 52. For more than 25 years, Len served as a Director and Officer on the Board of the United American Savings Bank. He continued to serve on the Board after retirement and helped the institution navigate the challenges of the 2008 financial crisis. A lifelong football and basketball fan, Len enthusiastically supported his alma mater, rarely missing a home game and attending the annual Big East Tournaments in New York City. His devotion to local sports and commanding personality earned him the honor of having a sandwich named after him at one of South Side's favorite eats, Fat Heads. His quick wit filled rooms with laughter, his warm heart and kind gestures touched countless lives, as he often went out of his way and above his means to help others. And, his deep-seated passion for sports and politics often brought a renewed liveliness to holidays and Sunday afternoons. He will be dearly missed and deeply remembered by all who knew him. Len is survived by his beautiful bride of 41 years, Elaine (Mihalcin) of Pittsburgh; daughters, Elizabeth of Pittsburgh and Julia (Jonathan) Lawless of Washington, DC; siblings, Timothy (Paula) and Victoria of Pittsburgh; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne of Pittsburgh. Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life on Sunday, November 8, 2015, from 12 noon to 7 p.m. at the Thomas J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Inc., 2323 E. Carson St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 9, 2015, at 10 a.m. in St. Adalbert Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 162 So. 15th St., South Side. (EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH.) In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics-Panther Club, P.O.
